Western States Chiropractic College has completed a new study which proves the increasing need for chiropractic treatment of cervicogenic headaches. This study that showed patients that received chiropractic treatment experienced more than a 50% improvement of those that did not receive chiropractic treatment. A cervicogenic headache is a headache that is caused by a structural misalignment in the neck that causes muscle spasm and pressure on nerves that in turn cause headaches.
Many of my patients have been involved in auto accidents and have sustained whiplash injuries. These neck injuries often cause headaches, said Dr. Steven Read, a Jacksonville, Florida chiropractor. Chiropractic gets tremendous results in treating headaches originating from a problem with neck, he added.
According to Dr. Read, some of the most common causes of these headaches are auto accidents, poor work posture, poor sleeping habits and neck strains through improper lifting.
Treatment is usually pretty straight-forward, explained Dr. Read. Chiropractic adjustments are used to remove pressure from the nerves that are causing the headaches. We also use different forms of physical therapy, massage therapy and simple exercises, he added. Eventually we also provide some recommendations to improve posture or give a special supportive pillow to help support the neck and keep the pressure of the headache causing nerves in the neck.
